Promote Healthy Parenting

Parenting therapists assist parents in developing effective parenting strategies and improving their relationships with their children.

They help parents navigate challenges such as discipline, communication, and co-parenting after divorce.

Distressed Children < - > Exhausted Families

I have spent the last 25 years facilitating positive change with complicated parenting challenges.

Together we can manage the most difficult behavioral problems and special needs issues.

Throughout my 25 years working in community children's mental health, schools, and private practice, I have honed my skill with child and family therapy, taught a variety of parenting classes, worked with divorcing and blended families, and facilitated parenting support groups. I offer guidance in effective parenting techniques for anxious children.

Whatever your specific parenting challenges are, I have solutions that increase mutual respect and build on your child's intrinsic problem solving skills. In addition to offering coping strategies for parents of anxious kids, I help parents guides children under my coaching using a strategic approach that recognizes your child's inner capacity for problem solving. (As a parent of young adults, I have had first hand experience and been humbled by the experience.)

The Nurtured Heart Approach

Since kids are energy detectives, I help you put your energy into behavior you DO want, rather than behavior you DON’T want. I utilize theory and techniques from the “nurtured heart approach”.

One powerful technique in this approach is “Kodak moments”. I show you the why and the how of this technique. I practice what I preach by noticing parental strengths and helping you recognize them in yourselves.

When you can do this for yourself, it is that much easier to do it for your kids.

You don’t have to tackle this alone. Help is a phone call away.

My Approach to Parenting

We start by setting goals, choosing desired qualities to grow in your children.

Next, we look for evidence of these qualities already being present in your child. This evidence is like “seeds” that get watered and nurtured, in order to build on what is working, rather than focusing on, and "weeding out”, problems.

In this way, samples of positive behavior get leveraged and increase. In each parenting session, I typically begin with the same kind of focus on the parents’ growth and success.

I use deliberate inquiry about one thing parents are proud of from their parenting over the past week. This serves the purpose of putting theory into practice by demonstrating the method, as well as conveying how it feels (and works) to be on the receiving end of the recognition.

This can be uncomfortable at first, but well worth the effort as your confidence and skill grow.
